Instructions
We ask that participating teachers register and submit their results and collection location data so that the information can be used by other classrooms nationally, and for research purposes. Teachers will register themselves and provide some core data into a main database stored at Washington University. This will allow us to track key geographical data as your students upload their results through this website. In turn, teachers will be able to compare collected data to information input by others in similar and/or different climatic zones. With the registration and acquisition of your kit(s), you will receive all of the materials you will need to complete a cyanogenesis assay with your students.* You will also have access to several teaching activities to get your students prepared to perform this important active research. Each teacher conducting the investigation must order his or her kit(s) separately. By receiving the materials, the teacher is agreeing to submit their class data to the online database located within this website. |
It’s easy to get started -- just follow these five easy steps:
1. Decide what kits you want to purchase, and obtain a purchase order (PO) from your school. Download this Purchase Order worksheet template to determine costs and submit a request to your school. One starter kit ($85) can serve a class of 32 students working in groups of four. Refill kits ($55) provide reagents and other expendable supplies for reusing a starter kit.
2. Register and Order Kit(s): Complete the registration and ordering form. Make sure to have your PO reference number first. Also be sure to enter a valid email address and school information, which will be used later when entering your data into the system. Your order will be mailed to you within 3-4 weeks of submission.
3. Visit Resources Page: Here you will find teaching guides, student guides, and several other activities designed to help your students as they participate in their research.
4. Go on a White Clover Hunt: Gather local samples for your students to investigate cyanogenic properties, and cyanogenesis allele frequencies in your local climate. Be sure you know how to identify white clover. The "Clover Identification Guide" and "Clover Hunt Activity" under Teacher Resources are designed to get students started on identifying which plants are white clover and which are close mimics.
5. Gather and Submit Your Data: Using the supplied kit materials, perform the assay with your students and enter your results through the website’s Submit Data (link) page. A comparative analysis of your area, and any area you choose on the interactive map will be sent to you immediately using our nationwide database here at Washington University.
